The treble awaits as Celtic made it 41 domestic matches unbeaten this season. After many horror shows at Hampden recently, an early goal from McGregor allied to opposition seemingly reliant on long throws whilst otherwise defensively passive, made for a comfortable 1st half. In the 2nd a break from another long throw saw a clear penalty awarded and scored. It could have been very painful for The Rangers after than but Celtic seemed to allow minds to wander midway through the 2nd half. Some half chances were carved out for the Light Blues. By the end their team and supporters seemed to have identified a bit of a gap.

Surely it’s Celtic who are entitled to the title ‘The’. When the club was first conceived, my grandfather was moonlighting in the Shuna Bar in Duke Street after a charity visit by Hibernian. The mostly Irish group were discussing a projected Glasgow equivalent with the same charitable purpose. They had a whip-round – half-a-crown a head – to which my grandfather did not contribute. They were debating names like ‘Harps’ or ‘Glasgow Hibernian’ when the highland barman leaned over.’ Call it The Celtic’ he suggested (my grandfather used to imitate him, ‘Ca-a -l it The Keltic’. (Somel highland football clubs in the city already incorporated the name, ‘Celtic’.) But it was the outsider’s suggestion that eventually appealed to Brother Walfrid. And definitely definitely ‘The’.
