A new view created today looking at volume of involvement in chance creation.
This chart aggregates the per 90-minute average involvements as measured by:
- Total shots
- Total chances created
- Total secondary assisting passes (the pass before the one that created the chance)
I have included the whole squad as it is interesting to compare similar roles.
Of the central midfielders, David Turnbull leads the way and has the highest volume of chance involvements in the squad at over nine per 90m.
This is not even boosted significantly by set play passes as this account for 0.79 per 90m only – he leads the way on chances created from open play (3.05 per 90m).
Liel Abada is the most involved winger. Despite his occasionally erratic passing and his wayward dribbling, Abada causes trouble for the opposition whenever he plays.
Sead Haksabanovic is not far behind and is a different style of player, more careful and considered. It is surprising ow far those two are ahead of Jota who has had a post injury slump, and Maeda whose volume is closer to that of a full back than an out and out winger.
Giorgos Giakoumakis is shown to be far more involved than Kyogo Furuhashi and it is interesting that Oh Hyeungyu looks like more of an all round forward than either current incumbents. Also bear in mind there is a substitutes dividend at Celtic. The five-sub rule means that actions per 90m for subs coming on for the last e.g. 30 minutes tend to be higher than those who started the match.
Anthony Ralston has the most involvements of the full backs and Josip Juranovic the least. The Croat’s most useful attacking threat is in ball carrying, much like Jeremie Frimpong.
Finally, going back to where we started, Reo Hatate has the least involvements of the midfielders bar the more defensively aligned Callum McGregor.
I will do something on “risk/reward” in the near future!

Turnbull is the stand out stat, but the table also reflects well on Jota imho as the top five all benefit more from minutes on the pitch while fresh and against tiring opponents.

I think that is spot on and a further follow up piece!

As ever, wonderful insight Alan. Encouraging stats for our much maligned young Argentinian LB, which is indicative of the exciting potential he has. Also a vindication of contributions of my personal favourite, Haksabanovic.
