The Dubai trip was a disastrous piece of corporate decision making by Celtic and this is discussed in depth on the latest Huddle Breakdown. Looking for silver linings is almost laughable yet as a result of the isolations, we can enjoy seeing how some of the youngsters handle the first team.
Against Hibernian in the last match, Stephen Welsh played at centre back for his 3rd start of the season. One was against The Rangers in a tactical nightmare, and the second was against AC Milan where he was taken off at half time (not his fault so much as a right sided pairing of Frimpong and Welsh being exposed, exacerbated by Duffy’s efforts to remedy). Given the circumstances of this match – a completely unprepared starting XI, the kid deserves a break.
As it transpired, he was one of the shining lights in the gloom. Pipped for Bhoy of the Match by Turnbull, who is fast becoming indispensable, he nevertheless posted impressive numbers.
Duffy had probably his best game for Celtic (up to the attempted clearance that led to the goal) which no doubt helped him. Celtic’s set up on the night in general helped him as neither the full backs nor centre backs did much wandering forward in what seemed like direct instruction. Frimpong was pretty much neutered. This was natural given the make up of the side but this conservative set up allowed Welsh the structure to put in an error free defensive display.
He only lost 1 challenge all evening and was second to Soro in ball recoveries. He took few chances with the ball completing only 4 successful forward passes that removed Hibernian players from the game, but overall 95% pass completion was further indicative of a safety first approach.
Qualitatively, he seemed to be a very organised and uncomplicated player. Welsh reminded me of Tierney is his approach to defending – safe, aggressive and no nonsense. Having most clearances at 8 further emphasises this.
I have very little data on Welsh but the next few games may allow him to play in less onerous circumstances. On this display, I’d be keen to see an Ajer/Welsh partnership for the rest of the season given Jullien’s unavailability.

That’s very encouraging. I had overlooked Stephen’s performance becuase I was so gobsmacked that Shane Duffy looked reasonably competent.

Yes it is encouraging as I find myself defending the defender ( but not the defence) against angry fellow fans a step away from running the lot of them ( board first) out of town. He has been there since aged twelve and made every grade ( and age grade International level) yet some see a loan out to that footballing crucible of attainment that is Aberdeen as progress for him. Good grief !
