Celtic’s thumping 7-0 win over St Johnstone was certainly the catalyst for “giving good numbers”. Oooerr, missus!
This was Celtic’s first 7 goal performance since beating the same opponent on the 3rd August, 2019 – the opening day of that season. Christie hattrick was supplemented by goals from Johnston, Ntcham, Edouard and Griffiths,
Let’s take a look to see if there are any season highs.
Match Stat Snap
- 84% possession is a season high
- 929 completed passes are the season’s highest by 101 passes!
- 4.64 xG is the 4th highest
- There have been 10 games with a higher Total Shots
- 646 is the 2nd highest Packing Score
- 40 possessions in the box are only the 8th highest
- 7 Big Chances created is also a season high
So, room for improvement then? lol
Celtic had higher xG and more shots in earlier 6-0 home wins against St Mirren and Dundee. However even in those matches, the opponents managed 0.91 and 0.44 xG themselves. This evolving Celtic team just don’t let you breathe. St Johnstone had the first shot of the game on 4 minutes through Hallberg and never threatened again. The sight of Maeda chasing back in the 80th minutes when 7-0 up tells you the desire this team has not to concede.
The high packing stats were helped by St Johnstone’s quite odd 5-2-3 shape. This left lots of grass in the midfield half spaces for Celtic to exploit. Starfelt (163 passes complete; 1 incomplete) threaded through 25 Pack Passes and Carter-Vickers (150 completed passes; 4 incomplete) 24 Pack Passes. This enabled Celtic to build attacks easily through midfield.
From that platform the goals were shared around and Abada became the first Celt to 10 league goals. The last time no Celtic player scored more than 9 league goals was John Collins in 1994/95. In 2017/18 Sinclair just made it to 10 with the last Celtic goal of the season, and with three others on 9.
Nice complacent week on the training pitch ahead!

I don’t understand that statement. ?

Hmmmm that’s not good on my part
Basically Celtic have always had at least one player score 10 league goals since 94/95. Abada ensured that would continue
Harley Quinn says
Ahhhh ok.
If your striker can’t hit 10 league goals per season he’s in the wrong job you’d imagine!

Or injured for half the season

It would be fun to see Joe Hart’s heat map for that game. Wouldn’t be surprised if his average position was beyond the penalty spot.
